Calvary Road Baptist Church History

On December 4, 1974,  a group of 20 believers began holding Bible Studies at the home of Hirstle and Bernice Henson located at 4118 Charlestown Rd.   A short time later they moved into a small building on Market Street in downtown New Albany.  On September 7th 1975 they called their first Pastor, Wade Sheffield and were organized into the Grace Baptist Church. Grace Baptist Church started as a sponsored work from Grace Baptist Temple in Salina Kansas.

God immediately began to bless this new work under Pastor Sheffield’s leadership.  From there the church moved to the corner of 15th Street and Beeler and later to a small building located on Oak Street.  On May 4th 1986, Dedication services were held in the churches current building located at 3795 Saint Joseph Rd.  The church later changed their name to Calvary Road Baptist Church.

Over the years many lives have been touched by the ministry of Pastor Sheffield and Calvary Road Baptist Church.  Many of the faces have changed over the years but the purpose of this church has not and it is still seeking to reach out to lost people and to strengthen Christians.

On March 4th 2007 Pastor Sheffield retired and Pastor Mike Kleitz became the second Pastor for Calvary Road Baptist Church.  Pastor Kleitz began attending Calvary Road when he was in the fourth grade, and God has allowed him to return home to Pastor the church that he loves.  Although ‘change’ many times is scary, it is also many times a source for blessings.  God is still doing great things through this ministry and will continue to do so.  It is important at this time to focus on what God has for us in the near future.

On September 7, 2008 Calvary Road Baptist Church opened it's new Family Fellowship Center.  On September 2, 2012 our Fellowship Center was renovated to house our Worship Sanctuary due to our ever growing congregation.  Join us as we attempt great things FOR God and expect great things FROM God.
